Bristol’s new municipal bike rental scheme. It’s called ‘Hourbike‘.
The rental prices are reasonable; The first 30 minutes are free and thereafter the charge is £1 per hour or part hour.
The only problem with the scheme at the moment is that you can only rent a bike if you have registered with the scheme and received your smartcard, you can’t just turn up and rent a bike.
When i first heard of the scheme i thought oh dear; great idea but the the council will ‘cock it up’ somehow, i.e. it would be too expensive. That’s not the case tho’. The prices are cheaper than the much publicised scheme in Paris called “Vélib’“.
- @Bristol, near to the tourist information office.
- City Centre, opposite the Hippodrome.
- BRI, outside the main entrance.
- UWE:
- Frenchay Campus – Near the Bus stop.
- Frenchay Campus – In the student Village.
- St Mathias Campus.
- Bristol Parkway Railway Station.
There maybe other locations but either I haven’t seen them or they are not on the hourbike website.
What the scheme needs is a lot more bikes and rental stations, lots of places were you can topup your account or buy a short term rental card.
Good luck to the scheme i say!

BRISTOL’S city centre rent-a-bike scheme has ended after less than 18 months.
Hourbike was launched in January last year as one of the key elements of Bristol’s Cycling City status, although it was not funded by the £23 million project.
